By exploring this subreddit, one can learn about the different architectural styles that exist and begin to understand what makes certain buildings particularly pleasing to the eye. The creators of “Sexy Buildings” are both from the states and their journey as moderators, according to u/filthyMrClean, started in a totally random way. It was in r/evilBuildings, a very well-known subreddit, in a thread about the Leeza Soho building, designed by Zaha Hadid, that someone commented on how the building looked sexy instead of evil. “One commenter said that the building looked sexy rather than evil, and another replied saying r/sexybuildings. It wasn’t a subreddit yet. Someone needed to make it. I responded to the thread saying if anyone made it, I would help mod. Less than an hour later I’m added to the group by u/urbanlife78 and we began posting!”

U/urbanLife78 went to college for architecture and this subreddit was supposed to be just something funny that neither u/urbanLife78 nor u/filthyMrClean thought would catch on. “I tend to post things that I come across in any of my architecture sources I follow or from architecture firms that I like.” U/filthyMrClean added that they find the images to post through lots and lots of digging through the internet. “It can be something that catches my eye in an article or a blog. Once I find something post-worthy, I search for the source to give credit. If I can’t then I won’t post it at all.”

U/filthyMrClean admitted that they weren’t expecting the kind of growth this subreddit got. “But we do see good discussions between people that do, so we’re happy to create that space for them.” U/urbanLife78 added that they try to encourage people to post what they think is ‘sexy architecture’. “Sometimes we will get the random complaint that a post shouldn’t be allowed, but with it being such a subjective topic, we have rarely taken down any posts.” U/filthyMrClean shared that sometimes they will get a random complaint, especially after posting anything brutalist, but that doesn’t stop them!
