“Go back to your country” are words that American citizens should never hear. Sadly, that’s what happened to people of color and of foreign descent. They revealed the harsh reality of not being accepted and told to leave. Donald Trump’s comments to four US congresswomen forced people to be more honest about living in a country where some people cling to the ancient belief that you can only be American if you’re white.
It’s heartbreaking to read the flood of stories on Twitter about racists singling people out just because they look foreign. People revealed heart-wrenching details about how they, their friends, as well as their family members were told to “go back” to their countries even though they were American citizens.

Latino-Americans revealed on Twitter that they were told to “go back to Mexico”, while people of color were told to “go back to Africa”. One Japanese-American born in Germany also described how he would hear the words “go back to China” as a child. It’s sad that even today, people judge others based on their looks and accents as though this somehow invalidates their opinions, patriotism, and right to live in the US. Wake up, people, it’s 2019!

The President of the United States denied that his Twitter comments implying the congresswomen should go back home were racist. However, it quickly became apparent that Trump may not have known where the politicians were born.
Three of the four women the President verbally attacked were born in the US, while the fourth immigrated there as a small child. Ayanna Pressly is from Cincinnati, Rashida Tlaib is from Detroit, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is from New York, while Ilhan Omar immigrated from Somalia and became a US citizen at the age of 17. Together, these Democratic congresswomen of color are known as The Squad.

According to the US census conducted in 2010, at the time of the survey, 16.3 percent of the population were Hispanic, 12.6 percent were African American, 4.8 percent were Asian, and 0.9 percent were either native Hawaiians or other Pacific islanders.
