The National Arts Club (NAC) has announced 12 new artist fellows who have been granted an 18-month membership to the club located in New York City’s Gramercy Park. The selected applicants, listed below, span a diverse range of artistic disciplines, from music and textile art to choreography and film.
Established three years ago and now inaugurating its third cohort, the NAC artist fellowship aims to provide visual and performing artists with “as much access as possible” to the club’s facilities and networks “at a time and place convenient to artists,” executive director Ben Hartley told Hyperallergic. In addition to free club participation, fellows can spend time in the NAC’s clubhouse and drop in on public programs, as well as occupy private overnight rooms at a discount.

Unlike many artist residency programs which are situated in remote locations and require artists to take significant time off work, family commitments, and other responsibilities, the NAC program allows fellows from the Tri-State area to weave their time at the club in with the fabric of their everyday lives.
“If you don’t have three weeks of spare time to go to bucolic Maine because you’re working a job, you know that residency is not going to be for you,” Hartley said.
“We like [artists] to utilize the National Arts Club as a canvas for their artwork,” he continued. “It could manifest as simply coming into our palace and having a drink and interacting with people. It could be doing a performance or a presentation. It could be working with other artists that are members to work on their artwork and to bring it forward. It could also be offering to present their artwork to our membership and the public for potential funding opportunities.”
“For us, it’s very much an open palette, where we say: we’re happy to bring you on board as an artist fellow. Come and engage with the club in a way that makes sense to you,” Hartley added.
There were more applications for the artist fellowship this year than ever before. Members of the jury included Catherine Kleszczewski, composer and member of the NAC Board of Governors; Tracy Hyter-Suffern, executive director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem; Linda C. Harrison, executive director of the Newark Museum of Art; John Mhiripiri, executive director of Anthology Film Archives; Lara Knutson, a visual artist and prior NAC artist fellow; and Hartley himself.
