This year’s theme celebrates women—past and present—who pioneered and inspired cultural, artistic, and scientific movements. In the run up to the one-day event, the Museum Day Twitter account has been sharing #WomenMakingHistory images, quotes, and facts. One tweet shares the story of Alice Paul, a leading advocate of the suffrage movement, while another gives a shout out to Susan B. Anthony, a pioneering feminist, who famously said, “Men, their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less.” Her birth place in Massachusetts is now one of the museums that is opening its doors to the public on Museum Day. The account also shared an interview with Amy Sherald, the contemporary artist who painted the famous portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama, which is now on display at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.

Want to be part of the fun? Head to the Smithsonian Magazine website to discover which museums are taking part in your area. You can download one ticket per email address, which provides free admission on September 22nd, 2018 for two people.
