130 dangling plastic guns make up this provocative U.S. map

For the annual Artprize competition in Grand Rapids, MI, sculptor Michael Murphy has entered a controversial new installation. His piece titled ‘Gun Country’ is a collection of dangling plastic firearms that, when standing in just the right spot, form a map of the United States.

The piece is installed on the terrace of the Urban Institute for Contemporary Art and features 130 toy guns. From the side, this simply looks like a mess of guns hanging from strings, but the frontal forced perspective combines them into a perfect U.S. map.

“The question I am most commonly asked is whether the work is for or against guns,” says Murphy. “The answer is that it’s neither. It is intended to stimulate conversation about guns and gun-related issues in the US.”
