19th Century Valentines

This is one of the most interesting handmade cards made just for Valentine’s Day. Produced in the mid-19th-century, the cobweb valentine cards were decorated by the motifs typical for the Victorian era. Cards had to be carefully cut into a thin layer of paper with the string in the middle of the pattern. By pulling a paper layer upwards, a romantic message was revealed. These cards are exposed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year this institution celebrates 200 years since the first Victorian Valentine’s Day card was made.
