Blogger Julia Marcum knows a thing or two about doing it yourself. Her blog, Chris Loves Julia, was named the Best Renovation Blog in the 2017 Domino Design Blog Awards and we can’t get enough of her can-do attitude when it comes to tackling any kind of home update. Together, Julia and her husband Chris make quite the design duo, and have quite the eye for modern, yet timeless design. They’ve completely overhauled their own home on a budget and continue to prove the power of simple, sleek design and a simple DIY project. This weekend, Julia took us through a few easy ideas for adding art to your bare walls. The best part of these ideas is that you can totally do them yourself. Check out Julia’s easy-to-achieve tips below.

Get the art ledge look
Save yourself from all the the hardware of hanging art, and instead opt for this easy art ledge. Choose a sturdy shelf (Ikea or otherwise) and arrange framed pieces as you please. It’s seriously that simple. The natural wood finish of Julia’s shelf completes her living room look, but the art ledge idea could also work over a mantle or on a smaller scale, in a hallway. The best part? The ledge makes adding new new pieces to your collection without rearranging a gallery wall or nailing more holes in your wall.

DIY minimalist portraits
Say hello to the chic, but totally affordable alternative to the standard professional family portrait. We’re loving the way Julia DIY-ed these adorable photos of her three girls, proving that you can have art in your home without the high cost. Printing the photos as engineering prints ensures that they’ll come out sharp and high-quality and is as simple as visiting your local Staples or printing shop. If portraits aren’t exactly what you’re looking for, you can order digital prints online and go through the same process for printing and framing. Either way, this project is an affordable way to create a quality keepsake that’s beautiful enough to hang in your home—even when the kids grow up.

How to get the perfect gallery wall
gallery wall is pretty much the go-to for arranging art on a blank wall. They’ll never go out of style, and as Julia proves, they’re totally easy to do yourself! The biggest tip here is to mix and match frames and place the largest print first.
