30 Unique Pasta Designs By This Chef That Went Viral On Social Media

It’s hard for many of us to imagine better comfort food than pasta. Now imagine devouring a noodle that rather looks like a work of art. Chef David Rivillo is offering exactly that – the pasta he makes seems too beautiful to eat and has earned him almost 40K followers on Instagram.

“Although I have eaten pasta all my life, I started working with fresh pasta in 2016 when I started my professional culinary studies in Porto Alegre,” David told Bored Panda. “Since then, I got my first pasta machine and never bought pasta again in the supermarket.”

“Everything started in 2019. I was already experimenting with colors in pasta when I made my first design to pay tribute to Carlos Cruz Diez. He is my favorite artist, and he has recently passed away. I reproduced the Cromointerferencia de color aditivo, an artwork he created for the Simón Bolívar International Airport, one of the most representative artworks for all Venezuelans. Since then, my mind has never stopped thinking about it and how to get different designs and patterns,” David told us.

When asked about his inspirations, David replied: “My inspiration comes from everywhere: nature, any artwork, architecture, textile, and fashion designs. I’m constantly thinking about making any design that looks interesting into pasta. Before the pandemic in 2019, I had some ideas in mind and did some minor stuff, but I didn’t have the time to develop those ideas entirely because of my work. It was just in the pandemic, throughout the lockdown, when everything started to take off.”

“There isn’t much information or courses available to learn about pasta design or colored pasta. So I knew that if I wanted to make better and different designs keeping the structure and the colors of the design before and after cooking, I had to make my research study. So I studied the science behind every ingredient involved in pasta, including the natural colors, to get the quality that I’m getting now,” David told us about his learning process. “My research skills and knowledge in chemistry and food science helped me throughout the process. All of them were crucial in the development of all the techniques.”

The talented chef says he will never be fully satisfied with the level of his creations: “There is so much to accomplish in pasta design. It is just the beginning of something great, at least for me. When you are genuinely interested in something, you never stop learning. I never thought that I would do what I’m doing now. It wasn’t easy, but everything that I have achieved so far is a result of hard work, tons of patience, a lot of constancy in everything I do.”
