While big, international galleries flock to neighborhoods like Tribeca, the Lower East Side’s art scene still retains its edge. Here, emerging and mature artists with deep connections to the local art scene work through cutting-edge ideas in offbeat shows held in generally smaller spaces.
The Frieze Art Fair, which opens at the Shed to VIPs in Hudson Yards today, will draw an international art scene hungry to find the hidden gems in a saturated city. Though the galleries won’t be as easily accessible to Frieze goers as ones in the nearby Chelsea district, going downtown will be well worth the extra bit of legwork.
