Two exhibitions of strange and wonderful work have opened at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles, and both shows explore surreal alternate realities.
One exhibition is a solo show by artist Lezley Saar titled ‘Monad.’ Saar is a Los Angeles native whose current works are oddly evocative as seen in the ostrich and eyeball piece below. In 2007, Artforum magazine said about her work, “The push and pull of trying to make sense of and develop into something heretofore unknown creates a beautifully strange language all its own.”

Continuing with the other-worldly theme, the second show is titled Parallel Universe and is a group exhibition including work by Sashie Masakatsu, Caleb Brown, Nathan Ota, Seonna Hong, devNgosha, Travis Louie and Hell’o Monsters. Caleb Brown, who created the piece Otter City has stated, “I execute these ridiculous and implausible scenarios by painting them in the most controlled and convincing manner possible, striving to make the unbelievable believable.”
