The feeling of one’s mind exploding is not uncommon. However, discovering that one’s head was filled with extinct animals certainly would be a unique experience.
Andrea Wan’s ‘Exploding Head’ portraits are provocative in their pairing of the face’s calm countenance with the exotic animals peeking out between fractured pieces of the surface. Not only does the series feature wooly mammoths and dodo birds, but an additional element of strangeness in these subtle works is the patterned shirts in some of the drawings. Outfits with designs of fried eggs and tiger print— these are odd portraits indeed.
