New technology can bring braille to a Kindle-style tablet

“Imagine having a Kindle, that isn’t a visual Kindle, but instead has a tactile surface that can be read by a person who is blind, using Braille,” said Dr. Sile O’Modhrain, an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan. As the informative video below explains, the refreshable device would display a full page of text, a significant advancement to the costly single line devices that are currently available.

The newly developed device functions off of pneumatics, using either air or fluid to create the upward pressure that would alter the display. For a full page display, this would mean five to ten thousand valves would be necessary to control each corresponding dot.
