Make art with us in the galleries! These exhibition-based workshops encourage creative inspiration for different activities, so make sure to check out the corresponding galleries. No prior art-making experience is necessary; our friendly staff will happily work with you on your creation. All ages are welcome! Please note, these in-gallery workshops are free with museum admission.
These workshops take place on Friday, February 2, 9, 16, and 23.
For Black History Month this February, we will explore Mark Bradford’s 150 Portrait Tone to understand the significance of the art process. Through tearing, sanding, layering, and other techniques, Bradford guides the viewer to understand and process challenging topics and emotions. We’ll reflect on moments and emotions in our lives and our communities that can be difficult to express and ask ourselves: how can you use materials to convey these moments or emotions? What has helped you process these moments or emotions. Whether it’s a song, a quote, or a poem, you’ll incorporate it into your piece and by the end of this artistic process, you will have created a work of art that has helped you perceive materials and express moments or emotions more effectively.
Bianca Argueta (she/her) is a Salvadoran descendant artist who resides in Los Angeles, California. Argueta received her Painting and Drawing BFA degree from Cal State Long Beach. Her artistic practice investigates inner city life and intergenerational trauma caused by war and a dysfunctional home. In recent work, Argueta samples images from various sources, recollecting memories from childhood that coexist with cartoon characters. Her artistic influences include Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jenny Saville, and Kerry James Marshall.
Masks are recommended in galleries. No food or drink in the galleries.
