This Side of Paradise: let’s explore narrative, cinema, and suburbia in the photographic work of Miles Aldridge and Todd Hido at Huxley-Parlour Gallery.
On view from Nov 15 – Dec 15, 2018 at Huxley-Parlour Gallery in London, This Side of Paradise is a new exhibition featuring the photographic work of Miles Aldridge and Todd Hido. The gallery will present twenty large-scale photographs with the aim to show how both photographers investigate the concept of suburbia. Both artists work in quite different styles but both are well known for their cinematic color palettes, lighting, and distinctive compositions. Hido’s work is characterized by a shadowy, empty, exterior suburban environment, while Aldridge presents the viewer images that are brightly lit with garish interiors. He is focusing on the imagined lives of the women who inhabit these homes.
Photographed at night, replete with voyeuristic undertones and an implied narrative, Hido’s photographs from his ongoing Houses at Night series, depicting isolated suburban homes in America. Using vibrant, richly saturated, acid tones, Aldridge depicts isolated women in highly-stylised, constructed interiors. These settings are charged with psychological tension and narrative ambiguity.

With inspiration from Hollywood cinema and directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch, both photographers Miles Aldridge and Todd Hido look to subvert the traditional American suburban fantasy. For further information about the exhibition, please visit the gallery website: huxleyparlour.com
