A Brutalist Mercedes-in-the-Sky Car Dealership From the Past

As global wealth has increased, a Mercedes is still expensive, but no longer a rare sight. There was a time, however, when a Mercedes was something that oil sheiks and ultra-rich businessmen drove. So the architecture of this Mercedes-Benz showroom in Coruña, Spain must’ve made perfect sense when it was built:

The car (a W115) floats in the sky above you, a metaphor for unattainability for the masses. It’s a garage for gods.

It appears that the owner of the building was happy to let it sit untouched well after the dealership went bust sometime in the 1960s or ’70s. And the car on display may or may not have been just a shell. In any case, it appears the building was finally torn down sometime in the mid-2000s, starting with getting that car out of the way.

“Ah man–I just checked and it turns out the elevator still works.”
