Despite what some hardcore Gothamists may think, “New York City” and “New York” are not synonymous: there is a culturally thriving world beyond the limits of the Big Apple, and its artists need just as much support. The Joy of Giving Something (JGS), a nonprofit dedicated to the photographic arts and arts education, has opened applications for its annual Photography Fellowship, a $7,000 unrestricted cash grant for photo artists working outside of NYC.
Photographers and artists whose practice involves photographic techniques are invited to apply via the New York Foundation for the Art (NYFA)’s website through Wednesday, June 30. Five artists will be selected for the award. Widline Cadet, a Haitian-born artist based in Syracuse, New York, was one of the grant’s recipients last year. The fellowship relieved some of her daily financial burdens, she said, giving her more time to focus on her practice.

“As a recent grad school graduate, being awarded the JGS Fellowship for Photography means the world to me,” Cadet said. “The timing is especially important considering the current state of the world and the hardships and uncertain futures that artists are facing right now.”
Interested applicants must be 25 or older and live and work in the following regions of New York State: Western New York, Finger Lakes, Southern Tier, Central New York, North Country, Mohawk Valley, Capital District, Hudson Valley, and Long Island. For additional guidelines, visit NYFA.
