Starting this Thursday, Angelenos can walk through Griffith Park to the sound of music. Artist Ellen Reid composed SOUNDWALK during the coronavirus pandemic, creating specific musical pieces for more than 20 miles of trails. All you have to do is download the free app and bring your headphones — a GPS tracker will know which site-specific compositions to play. Reid told Hyperallergic that she hopes the experience “creates a sense of mental space and inspires listeners to find the joy and strength to keep going.”
Reid has done previous iterations of this project, including at Manhattan’s Central Park, but as Reid explained, “The magnificent scale of Griffith Park makes it unlike any other location.” An alum of the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), Reid knows the grounds of the 4,300-acre green space well, and she decided to focus her piece around the Griffith Observatory and Hollywood sign. The music, she says, is inspired by “the shapes of the paths” and “evokes the massive sky and the challenging terrain.”

Commissioned by the Center for the Art of Performance (CAP) at UCLA, SOUNDWALK will also feature a specially made recording by the all-strings Kronos Quartet that responds to the twists and turns of the park.
