A heartbreaking memorial to the child victims of war

German forces surrounded the tiny Czech village of Lidice on June 9, 1942, in retaliation for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, a high-ranking Nazi official and the Nazi Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. They needed a scapegoat for the assassination, and this sleepy agricultural village was the perfect choice.

In the end, 340 people from Lidice were killed because of the German reprisal, 192 men, 60 women, and 88 children. Less than 175 people returned after the war.

Today, Lidice is still a quiet, tiny town. Except now it includes a striking bronze sculpture of children, entitled ‘The Memorial to the Children Victims of War,’ which includes 82 figures. It was created by artist Marie Uchytilová in the 1990s, and overlooks the old village. It serves as a striking reminder of some of World War II’s most innocent victims.
