A History Of The Title Sequence

A History Of The Title Sequence – graduation project from 2011 by motion graphic designer Jurjen Versteeg of studio From Form.

From Form is a Rotterdam, Netherlands based design and film studio founded by Jurjen Versteeg and Ashley Govers. They usually work in different creative fields such as print, film, set design, photography, commercials, title sequences, and graphics. Back in 2011, Jurjen Versteeg has realized this short film as graduation project. Using a mix of different motion graphic and filmmaking techniques, the video has been created as a possible opener for a fictitious documentary. It shows a history of the title sequence in a little more than two minutes. Jurjen’s opener contains the names of revolutionary title designers who had a strong impact on the history and evolution of the title sequence. Each name has been visualized based on typical characteristics of the titles that the designers have made. For example, this film refers to stylistic elements like the cut and shifted characters of Saul Bass’ Psycho title, the colored circles of Maurice Binder’s design for Dr. No, and the modern designs of Kyle Cooper and Danny Yount. In total, it refers to Georges Méliès – Un Voyage Dans La Lune, Saul Bass – Psycho, Maurice Binder – Dr. No, Stephen Frankfurt – To Kill A Mockingbird, Pablo Ferro – Dr. Strangelove, Richard Greenberg – Alien, Kyle Cooper – Seven, Danny Yount – Kiss Kiss Bang Bang / Sherlock Holmes.
