A Mid-Century Modern Los Angeles Home Inspired by Japanese Ryokans

Palmero is a minimal residence located in Los Angeles, California, designed by Joel Wong and Amanda Gunawan of Owiu. The project, perched on Palmero Drive, is a mid-century modern home set in the foothills of LA’s Mount Washington neighborhood.

Influenced by the design of Japanese ryokans, the building sits in harmony with its surrounding landscape. With a focus of calmness at its core, the architects wanted a space that would be a retreat to quiet the mind and take a pause.

The architects intentionally used glass privacy blocks, a quintessential mid-century modern design element, to achieve privacy without obstructing flow throughout the spaces. “We found the material to be highly versatile and intriguing; not only does it possess structural integrity, it also allows light to enter,” explains Wong.
