A Minimalist Home in Toronto Designed With a Focus on Natural Materials

A young couple commissioned Atelier SUN to design a residence in East York Toronto as a calm sanctuary to escape when their work is done. The Torrens House is a detached home spanning 960 square feet with an open floor plan that’s visually defined by a series of wooden screens. From the front door, the foyer has a screen that creates a passageway that both connects and separates the interior with the outside. Paired with clean white surfaces, the screens tie into the rest of the wooden elements throughout to create a minimalist aesthetic.

The open staircase, which has the same look as the foyer with its wooden screen, connects the main living area with the private quarters upstairs.

The original non-structural walls were removed to open the main floor up to feel larger. The wooden slats help offer a sense of openness in addition to privacy, along with providing ever-changing patterns of light and shadow.

Upstairs in addition to the master bedroom, there’s a baby’s room that connects to an office beside it via a sliding wood window for keeping an eye on the child.
