Leah and Thomas met in high school and started dating 7 months ago. They’d not known of each other before then, however, a fun coincidence was soon to be revealed

Leah Menzies, an 18-year-old college student in Australia, met her boyfriend Thomas in high school, quickly becoming the best of friends.

They started dating seven months ago and, of course, the time came to meet his family. Whilst Leah was chatting with Thomas’ sister, the boy was skimming through pictures of his youth.

Leah’s mom had passed away from liver failure when she was just 7 years old and she was devastated that she’d never meet her future boyfriend

“His mum was telling me how he made this stupid face in a school picture. She thought it was funny,” Leah told TODAY. “He opens this album and then suddenly, he’s like, ‘Oh my God. Oh my God – over and over again. I couldn’t figure out why he was being so dramatic.” Turns out the boy had spotted something quite shocking.

His kindergarten teacher looked incredibly similar to Leah’s mom, as he recognized her from the pictures his girlfriend kept in her room. It might seem like no big deal or a funny coincidence, however, Leah’s mom had sadly passed away from liver failure whilst her daughter was only 7 years old.

Since then, Leah has gone through major milestones, from graduating high school to learning to drive, wishing she could share the moments with her mom. She’d always been sad that her mom would never know the man she loved, and vice versa, however, this was not to be the case as the link was apparent.

But, whilst Thomas was looking through childhood photos, he recognized his kindergarten teacher as Leah’s mother

It was the only year that she taught at Agnes Goode Kindergarten and what a coincidence that it turned out to be the same year Thomas enrolled

The revelation made Leah burst into tears. “It’s incredible that she knew him,” she told Newsweek. “What gets me is that she was standing with my future boyfriend and she had no idea.” Thomas doesn’t recall his teacher, as he was just 3 or 4 years old at the time, however, his mom remembers her as being kind and very gentle.

She posted a video on TikTok of the coincidence, her running to jump onto the couch onto her happy man, then cutting to her taking out a ‘School Days’ book and opening it to her boyfriend’s ‘class of 2008’ kindergarten group photo.

Although Thomas was too young to remember his teacher, his mom recalled her being very kind and gentle

The video captions said: “Me thinking my mum (who died when I was 7) will never get to meet my future boyfriend. Only to find out she was his kindergarten teacher.” She described that the moment felt like something straight out of a movie.

The story quickly went viral, amassing an impressive 37.5M views and over 10M likes. Leah came to the comments to say a big thank you to everyone sending love, saying that they made her heart very happy.

What’s even more incredible is that her mom only taught at the Agnes Goode Kindergarten in Adelaide for one year and it, of course, had to be the year Thomas enrolled.

In a follow-up video she said: “I didn’t actually know that my mom taught at kindergarten, I just knew that she was a teacher and I didn’t know she did kindergarten, so that was probably like only one year that she taught there, and it just so happened to be Thomas’ year.”

Leah said that she’s taking it as a sign from her late mom that he’s a good one. As Deepak Chopra stated, “Coincidences are not accidents but signals from the universe which can guide us toward our true destiny.”

But whether you’ve lost someone special to you recently or many years ago, the feeling of loss can permeate everyday life.

What’s Your Grief, a community and space for those going through loss, shared that after someone you love dies, almost all ‘blessed events’ become a bittersweet occasion, with the mind wandering to ‘I wish [insert loved one’s name] were here’. Sometimes this is the case with new experiences in our lives or the people we meet that we’d love to share with those who have passed away.

Eleanor Haley, after losing her mom in 2012, received comments such as “She’ll always be with you,” “You’ll know she’s there,” and “She’ll never really leave.” But they’ve been nothing but infuriating, as she never got back the feeling of her mom being close.

Although loss and grief remain in our lives indefinitely, little signs like this can help rekindle a connection to those who’ve passed on

Years passed, she tried all that she could think of to get closer to her mother, but it’s never been the same. Eleanor believes that she’s seen signs of her presence, but the connection has never come back.

She stated: “As the years have passed by, I feel less shame about this. I’m not the only one, it turns out, who hasn’t been able to ‘feel’ their loved one. It turns out, none of us is a Jedi. I miss her. I miss her in a way that I didn’t know was possible.”

“I feel so far from her. And that’s when I feel her. I feel her in the way I can’t feel her at all. It is my sadness, the bittersweet joy of knowing that I once had the perfect mom for me, it is my longing that lets me feel her.”

We wish Leah and Thomas all the sunshine the world can give and hope to see more of their adventures in the future

So whether it be through little (or not so little) coincidences, signs, thoughts, memories, or acknowledging the present moment, our loved ones live on with us. Although differently than we’d wish, they are there with us and we will be too, for those that we love, when it’s our time to pass.

We wish Leah and Thomas a wonderful life, whether they stay together or not. But they know they have her mother’s blessing.
