As music lovers continue to mourn the loss of creative powerhouse David Bowie, a newly released book by PowerHouse Books is sharing photographs of Bowie that Steve Schapiro took in the 1970s. Schapiro, who had been a photographer since 1961, was invited by Bowie’s manager for a L.A. photoshoot of the pop star in 1974 after the launch of Ziggy Stardust.
Having photographed many celebrities, Schapiro said in an interview that he finds many to have a personal struggle when you’re in front of a camera. “They know who their characters are, but they’re confused as to who they should be or what image they should project,” he says. In direct contrast, “Bowie had a very strong sense of personal identity and he had a very strong sense of knowing exactly who he was and where he was going.”
