A new illumination for Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavillon

A new illumination for Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavillon was created by Luftwerk and Iker Gil with red lasers.

Luftwerk and Iker Gil of MAS Studio have collaborated to transform the Pavilion with an immersive intervention that sheds new light and sound on the seminal modernist building.

“Geometry of Light” projects a grid of red lasers throughout the building; illuminating the internal structure, along with external water features and Georg Kolbe’s sculpture ‘Alba’. The lines of light are “choreographed to trace, highlight, and alter the composition of the pavilion”, Luftwerk explains. Their animated movement is accompanied by the music of Oriol Tarragó; whose ethereal soundtrack adds a further element to this sensory experience of the space.

The project intends to expand upon the architectural features of the 1929 structure by creating “a new interpretive layer extending from the primary elements of the architecture, including the gridded plan, vertical planes, and materiality”, Luftwerk explains. The project finished showing at the Barcelona Pavilion on the 17th of February but will reopen at Mies van der Rohe’s iconic ‘Farnsworth House’—where Luftwerk has previously presented work—in October 2019.
