There are some reaction videos that seem forced, but this one captured by a well-meaning grandfather might be the most endearing we’ve seen yet. The grandpa in question, John Hart, filmed his response to a surprise marriage proposal when he should’ve been filming the proposal taking place.

So, how did it happen? Hart was visiting the Sandia Peak Tramway in Albuquerque, New Mexico late last month with his grandson Jayce and his grandson’s girlfriend, Jaime. During the ride, the three began chatting with another couple, and John made a joke about how the peak is the perfect place to get engaged. “I said, ‘Wow, hey, this would be a great chance for you to propose to your girlfriend,’ and that put a big smile on her face, and unbeknownst to me, that was the plan,” Hart recalled.
When they reached the top, the man proposing handed Jayce his phone and asked him to record the moment. Jayce then handed his grandpa his phone so that he too could record the proposal. That’s when technology got the better of John. During the engagement, he thought he was filming the proposal, but the selfie mode on the camera foiled his plans.
It was only upon playback that the family realized that John had recorded his genuine reaction to the moment—not the moment itself. While it was clearly a mistake, the video showcases John’s sweet reaction to these two strangers in love. And best of all, it gave everyone a good laugh!
Who among us hasn’t accidentally snapped a photo or made a recording in selfie mode? In a sweet reaction video, a grandfather named John unknowingly captured himself instead of recording a marriage proposal.
