Ai Weiwei explores imprisonment and freedom with Alcatraz installation

It’s the contrast that makes this piece so intriguing. Pristine white, ceramic flowers set within the context of hospital bathrooms of Alcatraz, the former high-security federal prison located off the coast of San Francisco. The piece ‘Blossom’ is part of a larger installation by well-known Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei.

The work is on display in the historic prison through April 26, 2015, with seven site-specific installations addressing issues of imprisonment and freedom. These themes are paramount to the artist’s vocabulary following an 81-day detainment by Chinese authorities. The works were installed remotely at the artist’s direction because he is not permitted to travel outside of China.
