It’s hard to picture out how famous people lived their lives as teenagers and young adults, much more so as present-day hipsters. In his new illustration project, Israeli artist Amit Shimoni does just that.
HIPSTORY, a series of carefully drawn graphic illustrations, is Shimoni’s artistic way of interpreting how history’s great leaders would look like dressed and incorporated with modern era’s culture and fashion. In the project, the Tel Aviv-based illustrator recreates the likes of Albert Einstein, Ronald Reagan, and even Russian president Vladimir Putin and recently retired Barack Obama styled in hipster clothing.

He does not completely alter them, however, and purposely leaves little details, almost invisible to the unattentive eye, that shed light to the characteristics that made them the great leaders that they are.
Queen Elizabeth II, to mention one, dons a flower hair accessory with a golden necklace hanging under the collars of her white blouse that says “Queen.” Albert Einstein, on the other hand, sports the popular undercut hairstyle for men with several visible tattoos on his body including the equation for his history-altering Theory of Relativity.
All of Shimoni’s illustrations are available for purchase at his website.
