An Angry Artist Installed a Peeing Dog Statue Next to “Fearless Girl”

New York City artist Alex Gardega is so against the Fearless Girl statue that he decided to respond with a sculpture of his own: a papier-mâché sculpture of a small dog lifting its hind leg to pee on the bronze sculpture planted in front Arturo Di Modica’s Charging Bull earlier this year. Gardega installed what he calls Pissing Pug in situ on Monday morning, where it remained for a few hours until the artist decided himself to remove it. Gardena told Gothamist, “There were a few people who got really upset by it. A few people kicked it. One girl tried to throw it.” Gardega says he’s holding onto the piece with plans to bring it back to the site again in the near future, and eventually sell it on one of his websites for $10.

On Monday, Gardega told the New York Post that he thinks Wall Street’s new champion of female empowerment “is corporate nonsense.” Of Fearless Girl, the artist said: “It has nothing to do with feminism, and it is disrespect to the artist that made the bull. That bull had integrity.” Di Modica himself has condemned Fearless Girl, which is a project from artist Kristen Visbal, New York ad agency McCann, and money managing company State Street Global Advisors (SSGA), personally calling for its removal under claims that it violates his rights by warping the meaning of Charging Bull in a way that’s injurious to his reputation. Di Modica is currently suing SSGA for trademark and copyright infringement.

The frame of Pissing Pug was spray painted bronze and appears to have been made in a rush. Gardega says its sloppy construction is intentional. “I decided to build this dog and make it crappy to downgrade the statue, exactly how the girl is a downgrade on the bull,” Gardega told the Post. He insists, however, that his work isn’t anti-feminist or at all targeting the Delaware-based sculptor behind Fearless Girl. “I would respect this if it was done by a random artist standing up against Wall Street,” he told Gothamist, adding, “I’m a very positive person actually, and I don’t like to see people get upset.” Gardega says the piece is part of a larger series where he’ll be putting up pissing puppies coated in gold paint all over Manhattan.
