An Easy Guide to Watching This Year’s Oscar Nominees

The nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards were announced this morning. Under normal circumstances, the awards ceremony for last year’s films would have been held by now, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the Academy’s timetable. In an unprecedented move, films that went to VOD without playing in theaters were eligible for consideration, and the release window for competition was extended beyond 2020 proper, through February of this year. The result is a lineup with some historic firsts — the first time more than one woman has been nominated for Best Director, the first time an Asian American has been nominated for Best Actor, and more. Here’s an easy reference for how to stream most of the nominated films, along with links to Hyperallergic’s coverage of them. Catch up before the winners are announced on April 25.
