An Extremely German Precision Espresso Tamping Device

Industrial designers Frederik Brückner, Christoph Gerdesmeyer and Jonas Krohn teamed up to create this attractive, precise and relentlessly German object: The Supertamp, a precision tamping device for espresso grinds. “Tamping espresso seems to be an easy thing to do, however, it is easy to make mistakes which may affect the quality of your coffee,” the trio writes.

“With Supertamp you can easily produce the same consistent quality – adjustable pressure and evenly tamped coffee grounds. Due to the guide ring around its solid base, it is impossible to tamp unevenly. With its unique technique and its scale, it allows you to smoothly adjust the precise pressure. Once the adjustments are made you are able to work on a continuous standard of quality. No matter if you’re a pro Barista, coffee enthusiast or café owner – Supertamp helps you to work more precisely and consistently.

“Never tamp wrong again.”

Made of anodized aluminum and stainless steel, the object contains a dial that allows you to select your desired level of pressure by modulating the internal spring.

Here’s how it works:

Strangely, there are no complete images of the (presumably included) receptacle that you are meant to tamp into. I imagine that it is fitted very precisely to the size of the plunger.

Brückner, Gerdesmeyer and Krohn launched their own company, Coto Studios, to produce and sell the Supertamp. It runs €/$195.
