An illustrator’s love of swimming results in a book

With the arrival of the warmer months, the public’s attention turns towards the pools, lakes, oceans and other swimming holes. In a timely celebration of this favorite summer pastime, Portland based illustrator Lisa Congdon has released a book called The Joy of Swimming: A Celebration of Our Love for Getting in the Water. The book is a collection of illustrations, hand-lettered inspirational quotations, profiles of swimmers, collections of ephemera such as vintage swimming gear, and hand-drawn infographics.

In telling the story of how she took up swimming, Congdon said, “I took to swimming like I took to eating: with a sort of relaxed devotion, as if it was my birthright to be in a swimsuit in 80-degree air next to a pool at all times.” Noting that the practice of swimming has carried her through breakups and heartache, the book contains some meaningful quotes such as this one by Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air.”
