An Innovative Design for Overnight Train Sleeper Car Cabins

This design concept for an overnight train’s sleeper car adopts an unconventional layout. By running the sleeping surfaces diagonally, the design increases the amount of berths that can be fit into each car.

“Individual coupe-capsules are arranged in two tiers at an angle, forming a herringbone structure in plan view. This layout makes it possible to increase the number of seats per car, from 52 to 58 (depending on the volume of service zones).”

“The sleeping berths are individual compartment-capsules, separated by a wall and a curtain from the common corridor. Passengers on both the upper and lower tiers receive an extended berth, a window, a table and a place for luggage.”

“Some elements of the interior perform two functions at once. For example, a ladder with built-in cushions and ledges is also a support for a standing rest (one leans against it), and the space under the table is used to accommodate the legs of an adjacent passenger.”

“The selected option is supposed to be used as part of a night train with a travel time of up to 12 hours.”

Called Yolochka, the concept was done for train manufacturer JSC TMH by design consultancy 2050 Lab.
