There’s an inherent enigma in portraits of artists. In any given photograph of them — whether at work, taken candidly, or especially when they’re posing for the camera — artists exude a raw, gripping and nevertheless calming power that can only serve to evoke further admiration.
Anne Purkiss is one of the photographers who have effectively captured this power in artists. In a new exhibition at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in England, fascinating photographs of sculptors by Purkiss, who has also taken pictures of scientists and other personalities, are on display.

The subjects of the photos include Sir Anthony Caro, Lynn Chadwick, Dame Elisabeth Frink, Sir Antony Gormley, Andy Goldsworthy, and Sophie Ryder. These sculptors have all worked with the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in the last 40 years.
The exhibition opened on March 4 and will run until June 4.
