Apply to RAIR’s 2023 Artist Residency at a Recycling Center

RAIR is a non-profit arts organization uniquely situated within a construction and demolition recycling center in Northeast Philadelphia. RAIR’s residency program provides artists on-site access to recovered materials and studio space to produce work.

The workspace includes a large project space, wood shop equipment, metalworking facilities, access to the waste stream for materials, and a material storage area. Artists-in-residence receive attentive support from RAIR’s staff, who act as liaisons between the artist and the recycling facility. In addition to providing residents with on-site access to recovered materials, construction equipment, and a fully equipped studio, the program offers artists the opportunity to use its entire three-and-a-half acre facility as an expansive project space for the development and presentation of ambitious, experimental work.

Residencies are open to all emerging and mid-career artists, both national and international. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older and not be actively enrolled in a college or university program during the time of residency. RAIR offers a stipend of $1,000 to the selected 2023 resident artists. Applicants from outside Philadelphia are eligible for housing and travel reimbursement.

The jurors for this year’s open call are Christina Vassallo, Executive Director of The Fabric Workshop and Museum; Paul M. Farber, Director and co-founder of Monument Lab; and Jean Shin, artist. They will be selecting the 2023 artists-in-residence and providing them virtual studio visits to provide critical peer feedback.

Applications for 2023 residencies will close on October 31, 2022, at 11:59pm (ET). Applicants will be notified early next year.
