Architect Ricardo Bofill converts Spanish cement factory into personal studio

This cement factory in Catalonia, Spain sat abandoned for decades until Ricardo Bofill bought and converted it into his personal studio.

The Spanish architect purchased the World War I era building in 1973 complete with silos and underground tunnels stretching for nearly two and a half miles. Bofill made some modifications and now it’s an an all-inclusive residence and work space. Gardens were added by Catalan craftsmen and the entire structure was transformed the old-fashioned way with dynamites. The project took about 40 years to complete yet Bofill is constantly finding things to tweak.

He writes, “I have the impression of living in a precinct, in a closed universe which protects me from the outside and everyday life. The Cement Factory is a place of work par excellence. Life goes on here in a continuous sequence, with very little difference between work and leisure.” Check out some images below and watch the video featurette too! Learn more on Bofill’s website.
