Architects took part in this year’s Fairy Tales Competition, winners revealed

The 2017 Fairy Tales competition was recently concluded at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. The contest was put out to call on illustrators, architects, artists, and writers to submit their entries that “create entire worlds of the imagination,” according to National Building Museum Executive Director Chase W. Rynd. He also added that the contest is aimed for the contestants to “build their immersive stories as much by what they don’t say, as by what they do.”

The entries for the world’s largest architectural competition came back with the most exciting and unique submissions. “Last Day,” the winning architectural entry submitted by Ukraine-based architect Mykhailo Ponomarenko, is a scene straight out of a strange, sci-fi movie. Complete with an absurd landscape and a hint of humor, it was definitely a reference to “current events, mundane daily activities and human emotions that we all easily relate to.”

Past winners of the Fairy Tales competition have gone on to recreate their submissions into graphic novels, short films, and exhibitions. And this year’s winners may also walk the same path. Below are the top three winning pieces of the contest.
