Art and China after 1989: Yu Hong

Artist Yu Hong describes her painting series “Witness to Growth” (1999– ), which pairs China’s social development with the growth of her daughter. “Against the backdrop of a nation-state’s grand narrative,” she says, “the quotidian details of our tiny individual lives are all the more important.”

Yu Hong is one of 71 artists participating in “Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World,” on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York from October 6, 2017, to January 7, 2018.
