To many people, the process of restoring a work of art can be just as fascinating as the piece itself. Aware of this growing interest, conservators from institutions both big and small have started documenting their projects in captivating videos, like this short film starring Julian Baumgartner from Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration.

Listen beautiful relax classics on our Youtube channel.

Shot by Chicago Aussie, the mesmerizing 8-minute video stars Baumgartner as he restores a 19th-century self-portrait by Italian painter Emma Gaggiotti Richards. Fixing the damaged and dirty painting requires a lot of effort. In addition to gently cleaning years of grime from the surface, Baumgartner also repairs tears in the canvas, administers a vapor treatment, and reapplies paint to areas where it has chipped, flaked, or faded away.

While these alterations may sound permanent, Baumgartner has a “non-invasive” approach to his craft. This means that all alterations are reversible, so clients can rest assured that they’re safe from any restoration disasters!

As Chicago’s oldest conservation studio, Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration takes pride in its practice. The tiny business was established in 1978 by Julian Baumgartner’s father, R. Agass Baumgartner, a Swiss artist and art historian. Now a second generation studio, Baumgartner works tirelessly to keep his father’s business, and legacy, alive.
