This year’s Art Dubai, dubbed the largest contemporary art exposition in the Middle East, opened on March 15 with a vast array of works by more than 270 artists from 70 countries. This year’s event marks the 11th time the annual showcase has taken place.
In addition to putting together a collection this wide, Art Dubai also offers a peek into how difficult creating art can be in the Middle East. One of the artworks on view, by Saudi-based Palestinian artist Ayman Yossri Daydban, features an Egyptian movie poster. To exhibit the work in Saudi, Daydban had to remove the part that showed the actress’s chest. For the Dubai fair, the artist added a frame below the poster and appended the cut-out parts to it.

“We had to cut out a few areas in the posters that may have caused problems” in Saudi Arabia, said Mariam Bilal, curator of the Jeddah-based gallery where Daydban’s work was previously exhibited.
Art Dubai will take place until March 18.
