Art pieces in collaborative exhibit “3 Artists, 3 States” all finished by snail mail

It is unusual for artists to work with others, but it is not unheard of. For the three artists that are soon to be putting up their exhibit at the Fernando Luis Alvarez Gallery, however, collaborating with each other was the key to finishing their work.

Loretta S.W. Barnett, Jesse Lane, and Diane Stendahl already knew each other before the idea of collaboration made it into fruition. Barnett is a professor in the fine arts department of Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire where Lane and Stendahl both attended classes in.

The exhibit called “3 Artists, 3 States” was born from the process of forwarding a piece of artwork an artist was working on to another artist in another state only by U.S. mail. The artwork would then be sent with notes or suggestions. Despite the obviously slow form of communication, Barnett said the collaborative work was “really a positive process” because “in these collaborative, there’s nothing to hold you back.”
