Artist paints 5,500 portraits of dogs that are about to be euthanized

It can be heartbreaking to think about the unadopted pets that are euthanized in America’s shelters. Artist Mark Barone puts the figures at 5,500 dogs that are euthanized each day in shelters across the country. In response, the artist has created the same number of dog portraits.

The massive amount of these sweet puppy faces calls attention to the statistics while also pulling at the viewer’s heartstrings. Through sales of prints and posters, the project has already raised $20,000 to aid the funding of carefully screened animal shelters.

“The word ‘shelter’ implies protection, which is what I thought was going on in America’s shelters,” says Barone, “but there are way too many that aren’t protecting animals in any way, shape or form.”
