Artist Spotlight: Jyan Ku

A selection of work by South Korea-born, Brooklyn-based artist Jyan Ku.

I was born and grown up in South Korea. I have been learned Korean culture, social customs, and philosophies from in my mother’s belly. These are deeply rooted in me somewhere in unconsciousness. I always want to express my feeling, imagination and thought freely. However, these educated minds are held down and control my flow of thought and creativity somehow. My art and style are strongly influenced by this conflict inside of me.
I focus on reading human’s mind and instinct and express them without modification and external control. It is kind of pure juice out of myself. Purity is really important to my work. I completely deny involvement any external influence that can affect to my art.
I brought the nature, human, and life to my imaginary world then I reinterpret, reproduce, and reorganize them.

Creating a world where “everything could be anything,” Ku encourages viewers to enjoy his work freely. As he states:
“Color could be emotions, the shape could be characters, and mass could be the stories… If it looks funny, weird or scary, just feel it and having fun with it. They are all inside of us.”
