FILM at LACMA presents classic and contemporary narrative and documentary films, artists and their influences, emerging auteurs, international showcases, special guest-curated programs, and conversations with artists and special guests.
This month, FILM at LACMA will feature a members-only series of award-contending documentary feature films. The series aims to educate and immerse the viewer as filmmakers share their unique perspectives on a Blues legend, a young female Afghan mayor, a robotic space explorer, and a former British soldier searching for healing in the Amazon.
To kick off the series, members are invited to join FILM at LACMA for a special advance screening of Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues and a post-screening conversation with director Sacha Jenkins.
Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues offers an intimate and revealing look at the world-changing musician, presented through a lens of archival footage and never-before-heard home recordings and personal conversations. This definitive documentary, directed by Sacha Jenkins, honors Armstrong’s legacy as a founding father of jazz, one of the first internationally known and beloved stars, and a cultural ambassador of the United States. The film shows how Armstrong’s own life spans the shift from the Civil War to the Civil Rights movement, and how he became a lightning rod figure in that turbulent era.
You can watch the official trailer here.
You will receive a link to view the film on the event date.
Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues will be available on Apple TV+ on October 28.
This screening is hosted by Slipstream, a LACMA-approved third-party screening platform. If you have not previously registered with Slipstream, you will be asked to provide a valid email address and set a password to create an account.
