Awesome innovation: MIT’s cheetah robot takes a running jump

Design and technology are evolving rapidly, and it’s always wondrous to see a project that is at the cutting edge of research and innovation.

A robotic cheetah that was developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is now doing things that no other robot has been able to do: running on four legs, and — using laser sensors to gauge terrain — the robot can sense its surroundings and leap over any hurdles without the added input of an operator.

Functioning autonomously, the video below shows the robot in action. “A running jump is a truly dynamic behavior,” says Sangbae Kim, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the college.
