Basel Week Switzerland ’17: Unlimited

Year after year, Unlimited is further confirming its position as an essential part of Art Basel week in Switzerland. Started as a unique platform that showcases art which transcend the traditional art-fair booths in scale by offering 16,000 square meters of exhibition space for monumental sculptures, video projections, wall paintings, photographic series and performances. This unique concept is becoming more and more popular both with the galleries that want to show the most ambitious projects by their artists, as well as with the visitors that have an unique opportunity to experience a wide selection of large scale works in one place.

For its 17th edition, the event included 76 projects, presented by galleries participating in the main fair (covered here & here). Curated for the sixth consecutive year by Gianni Jetzer, curator-at-large at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C., the section features a “wide range of presentations, from historically significant pieces to the latest contemporary works.”

This year’s works included everything from large scale paintings by Pier Paolo Calzolari and Secundino Hernández, sculptures by Peter Regli and Tony Smith, a monumental billboard-like piece by Barbara Kruger, conceptual works such as Philippe Parreno’s Christmas tree sculpture, minimalist yet thought provoking installation by Francesco Arena, to performance piece by Donna Huanca, as well as numerous video and multimedia installations, all the way to fully a equipped and functioning restaurant installation by Subodh Gupta.
