This month, Angelenos and beyond will get to experience the ambitious MAIDEN LA, an event (now in its fourth year) sharing projects by artists based all around Los Angeles County. The name is a cheeky allusion to the Hammer Museum’s Made in LA, a renowned biennial highlighting new and underrepresented work from Los Angeles-based artists (which is also expected to open in September). MAIDEN LA hopes to “broaden how a city’s artistic landscape is defined” by being as inclusive as possible. Impressively, the event accepts all projects submitted — this year, it is presenting around 75 artists, collectives, curators, and organizations.
As one would hope and expect, in-person events at MAIDEN LA this year are outside and socially distanced. There are also plenty of virtual options. Below are some upcoming events that stood out to us.

Union Square Florist Shop
Stop by the historic building of the Union Theatre, currently the headquarters of the Velaslavasay Panorama (which features a beautiful 360-degree panorama). On four evenings in the month of September, the building’s storefront will be filled with flower arrangements made by Master Florist Gladys Chantrelle Peckinpah from the Union Square Florist Shop. The flowers will range from celebratory bouquets and funeral sprays to floral headdresses for debutante balls.

20 Seconds In Memoriam
For his performance “20 Seconds In Memoriam,” Michael Rippens set up a public hand-washing station in a front yard, replete with biodegradable soap and disposable hand towels. One at a time, visitors will be invited to use the station and wash their hands for at least 20 seconds “to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus.” As they wash their hands, the water will reveal the names of “fallen doctors, nurses, paramedics, caregivers, hospital janitors, administrators, and nursing home workers” in the sink’s basin.

Sustainable Sculpting
Feeling inspired to sculpt but don’t have the materials? Emily Blythe Jones shares an eco-friendly mold-making recipe in this online workshop streamed straight from her kitchen. In addition to demonstrating how we can sculpt with non-toxic substances, Jones also plans to “demystify” mold-making techniques (and will be open to your questions throughout the workshop). For those who can’t make the event, the recording will be available after the fact on YouTube.
