Tombstone

Berthe Morisot’s painting contributes to a well-established genre of panoramic city views that would later be augmented by aerial photography and film. The location, near Morisot’s home, is the Jardins du Trocadéro, the site of the 1867 and 1878 Expositions Universelles and a great vantage point from which to gaze out on the city’s landmarks, such as the Panthéon and Notre-Dame cathedral. Here, two women appear uninterested in the scene below, while a young girl takes in the continuous motion of pedestrians, carriages, and riverboats.
