Tadao Cern’s “Black Balloon” art installation delves into the artist’s idea of contradictions. Big yet light balloons are filled up with helium and painted with a heavy black paint to highlight its contradictory elements. It is made more “hypnotic” due to the balloon’s solid yet lightweight nature which basically enables them to move around like objects in a trance.
Cern explained that he “used two regular latex balloons and two different gases: helium and sulphur hexafluoride – the light and the heavy ones.” He then “worked out how to make the balloons float in the middle of a glass tank without connecting them to anything. Compositions started to grow more complex and bigger then eventually I was working with 3-meter big custom made balloons,” he added.

The installation has already been proposed in ranging formats and is expected to soon pop up in an art gallery in New York.
