Big lumpy animal sculptures you will want to cuddle with. Do it.

Alanna DeRocchi is a sculptor and Instructor of Art at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, making oddly irresistible clay animals that you can’t help but want to hug. Her work derives from memories and things unknown. She explains, “The only things I know for sure come from what was personally seen and experienced, and anything short of that is disconnected – surprisingly unknown and almost imaginary.”

She creates animals from her memories or ones she has never encountered, not to make them “real,” but rather to tangibly explore what her ephemeral memories and conceptions look like in the physical world. They are presented life-size and raised off the ground just far enough to float, more like thoughts than living beings. Her installations force the viewer to question their own conceptions of the internally constructed and deceptive space between the real and the imagined.
