The coast of Denmark is still currently dotted with bunkers that were once a part of Hitler’s grand scheme of building an impenetrable Atlantic Wall to ward off his enemies. But with the recently constructed Tirpitz Museum, the dark and haunting past of this landscape has been successfully transformed into a rich source of history.
World-renowned architect Bjarke Ingels is no stranger to innovative design and in this project, he not only transformed the bunkers into a work of modern art but also redesigned it in a way that history still played a major role. The new building is gentle on the eyes and exudes a well-balanced mixture of sophistication and reminiscence. Talking about the project, Ingels thinks that “good architecture should go beyond the questions that have already been asked. And I think in that sense, this sort of harmony between the sand dunes and the open space is, I think, making this little corner of Denmark a little bit more exciting that it was when we found it.”
